Society puts so much pressure on children to learn and develop significantly faster than their brains are built to handle. I've seen so many preschools and childcare centers who prioritize learning the letters of the alphabet and even sight words as early as TWO years old. This is not developmentally appropriate for a two year old.

If I was going to school to be a surgeon, I would not start learning how to perform surgeries in the first few years. I would need to learn anatomy, medical terminology, biology, medical law, and more. This is the same for reading and math. Children need the foundations first.

Before I performed a surgery, wouldn't I have practiced holding a scalpel and learned the movements with my hands? This can be compared to expecting a two or three year old child to write their name before they have the fine motor skills, or before they've had the chance to scribble, draw, and work on pre-writing strokes!

Tips to Prepare Your Child

"Readiness doesn’t mean just knowing the academic basics. It means a child has a willing attitude and confidence in the process of learning: a healthy state of mind."
